Odoo has started rolling out Odoo 20, the newest edition of its business management platform, and the upgrade puts artificial intelligence directly inside everyday business workflows while adding a deeper set of India-specific tools for accounting, imports and reporting. The release was previewed live at Odoo Experience India 2026 in Gandhinagar, which drew about 35,000 attendees to the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre across September 11 and 12.
For Indian small and mid-sized businesses, the significance is practical rather than flashy. ERP software is where sales, inventory, invoicing, purchasing, websites and marketing already meet, and Odoo 20 pushes automation into that shared space instead of leaving it in a separate collection of tools.
AI Automation Moves Inside the ERP Workflows
The biggest change is where Odoo's AI capabilities now operate. In Odoo 20, the platform's AI can work with business information, create and update records, and carry out tasks inside the system itself. Automated and scheduled actions can also trigger these capabilities, which means routine steps such as updating a record after a customer action, or generating a follow-up inside a sales flow, no longer require an employee to move data between disconnected applications.
That shift matters for lean teams. An SME with a handful of staff pays an invisible tax every time information has to be re-entered in another tool. When automation runs within the ERP, the same data that feeds an invoice can also feed inventory counts, purchasing decisions and reports, cutting both the time spent and the errors introduced by manual re-entry.
Odoo 20 also brings improvements across the core applications that most growing companies run daily. CRM, sales, inventory, manufacturing, accounting and other business apps receive updates aimed at keeping information and processes connected inside one platform rather than across a stack of disconnected subscriptions.
What Odoo 20 Changes for Indian SMEs
The India-specific side of the release is substantial. Odoo 20 expands the platform's accounting and compliance capabilities for Indian businesses, covering GST workflows, TDS handling, imports and financial reporting. For smaller companies, the additions bring more of the work that usually spills into separate spreadsheets into the same system that handles everyday financial operations.
Key India-focused additions include:
- Extended support for businesses operating under the GST Composition Scheme, including workflows for composition taxpayers and returns such as CMP-08 and GSTR-4.
- Support for GST QRMP-related workflows for eligible businesses.
- More flexible TDS processing, with separate options for TDS and payment, TDS only, and payment only, giving businesses different ways to handle vendor transactions and deductions.
- A Bill of Entry flow for imported goods, allowing customs duty to be included in inventory costing through landed costs so import-related expenses connect to what products actually cost.
- Financial statements aligned with the presentation, classification and disclosure requirements under Schedule III, Division I of the Companies Act.
The pattern is consistent: transactions that once lived in different systems — a purchase, an import, a vendor payment, a return — now touch each other inside one connected environment, which is exactly where smaller businesses lose the most time.
Websites, eCommerce and Marketing Get AI Helpers
Businesses selling online or managing their own websites also get new capabilities in Odoo 20. The platform adds tools for creating and managing website and eCommerce content, including AI-assisted editing and generation features. The goal is to let businesses manage their digital presence alongside their other operations instead of treating the website or online store as a separate system.
Marketing automation receives a similar update. AI can assist with campaign creation, and the Social Marketing app can use AI to write social media posts. Businesses can also build workflows around events and customer actions, so follow-ups happen automatically when a prospect or customer does something specific.
For an Indian SME running its own digital marketing, the practical effect is that content production — often the slowest part of staying visible — moves closer to the customer data that should inform it. As with any AI-generated material, a human review pass before publishing remains the sensible rule for tone and accuracy.
Odoo 20 Pricing: A 20 Percent Cut for Smaller Budgets
Odoo has also reduced plan prices with this release. The Standard plan is now Rs 580 per user per month, and the Custom plan is Rs 1,080 per user per month, with both reflecting a 20 percent reduction from their earlier annual prices. For employees who only need lighter access, a Light User plan is available at Rs 195 per user per month.
Pricing is often the quiet blocker when small businesses evaluate ERP software, because costs scale with every staff account added. A 20 percent reduction changes the arithmetic for teams that want to give more employees direct access to the system instead of routing everything through one or two power users.
The Bigger Picture for Indian Small Businesses
The scale of the Gandhinagar gathering says something about the market. Odoo Experience India 2026 hosted more than 100 sessions and 180-plus exhibitors, and a pre-event hackathon drew 1,532 developers across 529 teams — an offline recruitment hackathon that earned a World Book of Records entry. Business software has moved from a back-office expense to a growth tool that owners actively shop for, compare and learn about.
Odoo 20's combined pitch — AI automation across everyday workflows, deeper India localization, and cheaper plans — fits that moment. For businesses weighing an upgrade or a first ERP purchase, the sensible checklist stays the same: pilot the software with your own data before committing, check how the upgrade path works for your current setup, and account for implementation support in the total cost, not just the subscription.
What has changed is the baseline. Connected workflows and built-in automation are no longer features reserved for large enterprises — releases like Odoo 20 are pushing them down into the price range and tooling that small Indian businesses can realistically adopt.
