Nvidia Invests $3.5 Billion in MediaTek: How NVLink Fusion Keeps Nvidia at the Center of the Custom AI Chip Boom

On September 1, 2026, Nvidia and MediaTek announced a partnership that reshapes the economics of the AI chip industry. Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion in convertible bonds issued by Taiwan's MediaTek, the world's largest smartphone chip designer by market share. In exchange, MediaTek will adopt Nvidia's NVLink Fusion platform, letting MediaTek's customers design custom AI chips that plug directly into Nvidia's data center systems. The announcement sent MediaTek shares up 10% in a single session and capped a rally of nearly 200% for the year.

The Deal: $3.5 Billion in Convertible Bonds

The investment is part of MediaTek's record $3.9 billion overseas convertible bond offering, with Alphabet also participating in the raise, though the company has not disclosed the size of its stake. Convertible bonds are debt instruments that can later be converted into shares, which means Nvidia's commitment starts as financing rather than an outright equity purchase. Portfolio managers immediately noted the structure. "Nvidia is financing MediaTek so MediaTek can develop products that extend Nvidia's architecture," Joe Tigay, portfolio manager of the Rational Equity Armor Fund, told Reuters. "That makes it less circular than Nvidia financing a customer, but it is still Nvidia using its balance sheet to accelerate ecosystem growth."

The market reaction was swift. MediaTek stock jumped 10% on Tuesday after the announcement, adding to a remarkable year in which the Taiwanese company's shares have nearly tripled. MediaTek had already told investors in June that its custom AI chip division was on track to contribute $2 billion in revenue in 2026, with a total addressable market it estimates at up to $80 billion by 2027. The Nvidia deal is widely read as a validation of that roadmap, positioning MediaTek as a serious challenger to Broadcom and Marvell in the custom data center silicon market.

What Is NVLink Fusion?

NVLink Fusion is Nvidia's answer to a question that has hung over the company for two years: what happens when your biggest customers start building their own chips? The platform gives chipmakers ready-made connectors, memory architecture, and networking technology so that custom AI accelerators can be plugged into Nvidia's rack-scale AI factory systems without designing the interconnect from scratch. A customer designing a chip for, say, a hyperscaler's inference workloads can focus on its own compute architecture while inheriting Nvidia's proven scale-up and scale-out technology stack.

The practical consequence is significant. Building a working accelerator, engineers point out, is only the beginning of the job. The chip must also talk to memory, network, and neighboring processors at enormous bandwidth, a problem Nvidia has spent more than a decade solving with NVLink. By opening that layer to MediaTek's customers, Nvidia is effectively saying: build your own chip if you like, but build it into our system. "We expanded beyond pure computing chips years ago," is how Nvidia frames its own evolution, according to TechCrunch's analysis of the announcement.

Why Nvidia Is Paying to Help Others Build Chips

The strategic context is impossible to miss. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic are all investing heavily in custom silicon to reduce dependence on Nvidia GPUs. OpenAI's Jalapeño chip has posted industry-leading inference benchmarks, while Anthropic has held discussions with Samsung about a custom chip partnership. If those projects succeed, Nvidia faces the prospect of its largest customers gradually migrating workloads to in-house hardware.

Nvidia's response, visible across its recent investments, is to own the layer that custom chips cannot do without: the interconnect and the rack-scale architecture. The company has spread capital across the AI supply chain, from power infrastructure developer Lancium to chip designer Marvell Technology, and now to MediaTek. The logic is consistent. Training and inference will increasingly run on a mix of merchant GPUs and custom accelerators, but every one of those accelerators will need to plug into something. If that something is NVLink Fusion, Nvidia remains at the center of the AI data center regardless of whose logo is on the silicon.

As Jon Peddie Research put it, the real story is not the money but the architecture: "MediaTek becomes the SoC design and packaging partner that makes this possible, spanning data centers, consumer AI PCs, and software-defined cars." Competition in AI infrastructure, the analysis suggests, shifts from one GPU vendor against another toward one integrated stack against everyone else's fragmented pieces.

MediaTek's Transformation: From Smartphones to Data Centers

For MediaTek, the deal accelerates a diversification strategy that has been years in the making. The company holds the top position in global smartphone chip sales by market share, according to Counterpoint Research data cited by CNBC, putting it in direct competition with Qualcomm. But smartphone volumes are maturing, and MediaTek has been building a second engine in custom silicon for AI workloads.

The partnership gives MediaTek several things at once:

  • Access to Nvidia's NVLink Fusion ecosystem, including NVLink technology that lets chips communicate at high bandwidth regardless of who designed them
  • A prevalidated path for its customers to deploy custom accelerators inside Nvidia's rack-scale AI factories
  • A $3.5 billion capital infusion that signals strategic endorsement to hyperscaler customers
  • Multi-generational collaboration commitments across AI infrastructure, local AI computing, and automotive

MediaTek vice chairman and CEO Rick Tsai framed the alliance around a shared vision: "MediaTek and NVIDIA share a vision for making advanced AI computing pervasive across the technology landscape. By combining NVIDIA's leadership in accelerated computing and AI software ecosystem with MediaTek's expertise in a diverse AI technology portfolio from edge to cloud, and our leadership position in custom silicon, we can accelerate innovation for our customers."

Beyond Data Centers: PCs and Cars

The partnership extends well past the data center. The two companies already have products in market together: MediaTek co-developed the GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip that powers Nvidia's DGX Spark developer computer, pairing a Blackwell GPU with a Grace CPU over NVLink-C2C. In June, the companies launched the RTX Spark PC chip, bringing AI features directly to laptops and desktops. In automotive, MediaTek's Dimensity Auto platforms integrate Nvidia technology and RTX graphics for intelligent vehicle cockpits and work alongside Nvidia Drive AGX, with both companies describing a scalable architecture for future generations of AI-defined vehicles.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called MediaTek "one of the world's great semiconductor companies" and described the broader ambition: "AI is transforming every computing platform, from the world's largest AI factories to the PC and the car. Together, we're building platforms that bring NVIDIA accelerated computing to new markets and give customers the freedom to create differentiated AI systems at enormous scale."

What It Means for the AI Industry

The MediaTek investment is best understood as one move in a longer campaign. Nvidia holds equity or strategic capital across interconnect, custom silicon, and power infrastructure, and the MediaTek deal extends that pattern to the very customers who might otherwise compete with Nvidia's own chips. The result is an AI compute landscape in which custom silicon from multiple vendors coexists with Nvidia GPUs inside a common Nvidia-defined infrastructure layer.

There are open questions. The conversion price of the bonds has not been disclosed, leaving the eventual equity implications unclear. MediaTek's custom chip customer base remains largely private, and Broadcom's dominance of the custom silicon market is not going to evaporate overnight. But the direction of travel is clear. The AI chip wars are no longer simply GPU against GPU; they are increasingly about who defines the system in which every chip, custom or otherwise, will have to live. With NVLink Fusion now in MediaTek's hands, Nvidia has made a $3.5 billion bet that it will continue to write that definition.
