Justdial and Beyond: Getting Your Shop Listed Where Customers Search

Ask a shop owner where customers find them online, and most will answer with one word: Google. But in the way Indian customers actually search, Google is only one of several front doors. A customer hunting for an electrician opens Justdial. Someone with an iPhone taps the Maps app that came with the phone - that is Apple Maps, not Google. A person searching on a Windows laptop sees Bing results. And for services from pest control to beauty parlours, thousands of enquiries start every day on Sulekha.

Each of these platforms is a free door into your shop, and most take less than half an hour to open. This guide covers the listings that matter for an Indian small business, the details that decide whether customers actually call you, and the simple rules that keep pushy sales calls from costing you money.

Why One Google Listing Is Not Enough

Think of the internet in India as a busy market street. Google is the biggest shopfront on that street, but customers wander everywhere. The spread looks like this:

  • Justdial works like a phone book that talks back. Customers search a category and a locality - "plumber near me", "AC repair" - and call the first few numbers they see. Justdial's own free-listing page reports over 19 crore buyers and more than 5.6 crore businesses listed on the platform.
  • Sulekha is strongest for services: repairs, beauty, tutoring, cleaning, catering, event work. Its business page reports 30 lakh+ monthly visitors and 8 lakh+ enquiries across more than 1,000 categories.
  • IndiaMART is the business-to-business counterpart. If you sell in bulk or supply other businesses, this is where wholesale buyers look. Registration is free with zero commission, and the seller page counts over 20 crore buyers.
  • Apple Maps and Bing Places catch customers Google never sees: iPhone users tapping the built-in Maps app, and Windows users searching on Bing, which reports more than 140 million daily active users.

The good news is that these listings support each other instead of competing. Your website and social pages get linked from every profile you create, and a shop a customer has seen in three places feels more real than a shop they found once. Justdial's own guidance says it plainly: a free listing complements your website and social media presence.

Start With the Three Big Directories

None of these three needs a developer, a designer or a single rupee to begin. Keep your phone in one hand and your shop details nearby - name, full address with a landmark, working hours, and a folder of photos.

Justdial in three steps. The free-listing page spells out the whole process: enter your mobile number and verify with the OTP; add your business details - name, address, business hours and photos; then select the categories that fit. Your business page goes live and becomes searchable.

Three details separate a listed shop from a found shop. First, pick the most specific category that fits - "washing machine repair" will out-call a vague "electronics" listing every time, because it matches what customers type. Second, add your website and social links, so the listing becomes another entrance to everything you already have online. Third, upload eight to ten real photos - shopfront, interior, work, team - and switch on the response habits Justdial's own tips recommend: answer reviews and questions, because profiles that reply look alive.

Sulekha for service businesses. If you run a service - pest control, a beauty parlour, appliance repair, a tuition centre - create the free profile, list your services in detail, and enquiries arrive with customer contact details so you can call back right away. You can set locality preferences and pause the lead flow when you are fully booked. Start free, and look at paid lead packages only after you know how well you convert the free ones.

IndiaMART if you sell in bulk. Wholesalers, manufacturers and suppliers should register on IndiaMART, where business buyers post requirements. Registration is free with no commission, and the seller page asks for a minimum of three products or services to build your free listing page. B2B buyers are detailed readers, so spend an hour on clear product names, sizes and prices.

Do Not Forget the Other Map Apps

Two free map listings are usually forgotten, and both take under twenty minutes to start.

  • Apple Maps. Every iPhone in your neighbourhood carries it. Apple's business page promises to put your business on the map "for millions to see", and you can switch on actions such as bookings or appointment requests, so customers can move straight from the map to a slot with you.
  • Bing Places. Free to claim, with options to share deals and announcements, add photos, and see simple insights. With Bing reporting over 140 million daily users in 190+ countries, the effort-to-reach ratio is hard to beat.

Verification for both can take a few days, so start them the same evening you do the directories and let the paperwork process in the background.

The Details That Decide Whether You Get the Call

Listing is the easy half. These four details turn a listing into ringing phone calls:

  • One version of your name, address and phone number. Write the standard version once - exact spelling of the shop name, the landmark, the number - and copy it everywhere. When platforms disagree about where you are, customers hesitate.
  • Hours that match reality. Include your weekly off and mid-day break. In festival season, timings change: update every listing a day in advance, because a customer who finds your shutter down when the listing said open rarely comes back a second time.
  • Reply fast. Directory enquiries go to whoever answers first. Decide who checks them - you or one staff member - and check twice a day, morning and evening.
  • Reviews travel with you. When a happy customer says they will tell friends, ask them to leave the review on whichever platform they found you on. Replying to reviews, especially calmly to the unfair ones, is read by the next hundred customers.

Watch Out for the Sales Calls

Within a week of listing, your phone will start ringing with offers: premium placement, "Google verification", annual "renewal". Some callers are genuine resellers; some are not. Four rules keep you safe:

  • Never pay on a phone call. Pay only on the platform's own official website or app, from your own device.
  • Never share an OTP with anyone, whatever the caller claims to be.
  • A free listing does not expire, so any story about a "mandatory renewal fee" is a red flag - check your own listing before believing it.
  • Ask for every offer in writing by email before deciding. Serious companies send it; the rest hang up.

Your First Ninety Minutes

One evening is enough to open every door that matters. Take them in this order:

  • First 30 minutes: the Justdial free listing - number, OTP, business details, categories, photos.
  • Next 25 minutes: Sulekha if you sell services, or IndiaMART if you sell in bulk - whichever matches your business.
  • Next 20 minutes: claim your Bing Places listing.
  • Last 15 minutes: create the Apple Maps listing.

Then set one reminder for three months from today: refresh photos, confirm hours, and add anything new you have started selling. After that, add one platform per week - local directories, trade associations, your industry's apps - whenever you have a quiet hour.

One Google listing is a shop with one door. A shop listed on Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, a map app and a couple of directories is a shop with five or six - and every customer walks through whichever door is nearest to them.
