The ranked links remain on the page, but they are secondary. For publishers, content creators, and the broader web ecosystem, the implications are far more profound.

What Gemini 3.5 Flash Actually Does in Search

Understanding what Google replaced blue links with requires understanding how Gemini 3.5 Flash processes a search query. Traditional search ranked web pages by relevance signals — backlinks, content authority, freshness, and hundreds of other factors — and returned a list of the most relevant pages. The user decided which page to visit. The search engine was a pointer.

Gemini 3.5 Flash operates differently. It performs retrieval-augmented generation: it fetches content from multiple web sources matching the query, then synthesises a new text document from that content, written in its own words. Source citations appear inline as numbered references within the prose. The user reads the synthesis, and the underlying sources are available but secondary.

According to Google, Gemini 3.5 Flash is four times faster than comparable frontier models in output tokens per second, allowing the company to generate a synthesised answer for nearly every query at the speed users previously received a list of links. The model is engineered for agentic tasks requiring multi-step reasoning at low latency, making it suitable not just for search but for coding, planning, and complex workflows.

The Google Antigravity platform extends this further. For queries where a visual or interactive format would serve the user better than prose, Antigravity assembles custom interfaces on the fly — a mortgage calculator for a rates query, an elevation map for a hiking trail query, a fitness tracker for a wellness question. These generative UI elements are rolling out free to all users through 2026. More advanced capabilities — background information agents that monitor topics 24/7 and push synthesised updates, and persistent custom dashboards — launch first to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

The trade-off is that users who rely on the AI answer without clicking through are receiving a document whose accuracy depends entirely on Gemini's synthesis of source material, with no easy way to evaluate the underlying sources without explicitly seeking them out. Google's own search advertising business generated $60.4 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2026, growing 19% year over year — while ads now appear in 25.5% of AI Overview results, creating a monetisation path for Google inside the very AI experience that eliminates publisher traffic.

Critics describe this as a structural catch-22. Google's AI answers synthesise content produced by the publishers whose traffic is collapsing. If that production declines because the revenue model that sustained it no longer works, the AI will be synthesising from an increasingly stale and shrinking content base. A search engine that consumed the web it needed to answer questions is left with worse material to work with over time.

Legal and Regulatory Fallout

The transformation has triggered an unprecedented wave of legal and regulatory challenges across multiple jurisdictions. On May 28, 2026, the 26th Civil Chamber of the Regional Court of Munich ruled that an AI Overview is Google's own speech, not a neutral display of third-party content. The Atlantic filed a federal antitrust lawsuit in January 2026 alleging similar conduct. The European Publishers Council filed a formal complaint with the European Commission in February 2026.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority ordered Google to provide a publisher opt-out mechanism from AI features, rolled out in June 2026 via Search Console. The European Commission opened two Digital Markets Act specification proceedings against Google in January 2026, with a record fine against Google's search business for self-preferencing expected before August 2026. What Comes Next

The July 10 rollout is not the endpoint. Several capabilities announced at I/O 2026 are still rolling out. Generative UI — custom interactive tools, simulations, and dashboards built by Gemini on the fly — arrives free to all users this summer. Background information agents that monitor topics and data sources 24/7 and push synthesised updates are rolling out first to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Agentic booking, which allows Google to complete purchases inside Search without the user visiting a vendor's website, is in early US rollout. Google has also released newer models since the July 10 rollout. The structural question that remains unanswered is whether the web's content creation ecosystem can survive a transition where Google captures the value while publishers bear the cost. The answer will likely be determined not by product roadmaps, but by courtrooms, regulators, and the collective choices of users who decide whether to accept Google as the final destination rather than a gateway.
