Google DeepMind Shakeup: Jeff Dean Exits After 27 Years to Launch Discovery Loop

August 5, 2026 will be remembered as one of the most consequential days in Google's AI history. In a memo posted to the company blog, CEO Sundar Pichai announced a sweeping reorganization of the company's artificial intelligence divisions: Demis Hassabis, co-founder and longtime chief executive of Google DeepMind, would step back from day-to-day operations to become chairman of the unit and chief scientist of Alphabet. At the same time, Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist and its 30th employee, revealed that he was leaving the company after 27 years to launch a new startup called Discovery Loop, joined by three other veteran researchers.

What Changed in Google's AI Leadership

The announcement on August 5 reshaped two of the most important roles in the AI industry. Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and joined Google when the search giant acquired the London lab in 2014, is handing over operational control after more than a decade at the helm. He will remain chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, the drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind, and will advise DeepMind's leadership from the Platform 37 offices in London while working closely with Pichai on strategic and global AGI matters.

Taking over day-to-day leadership is Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's chief technology officer, who becomes senior vice president and reports directly to Pichai. Kavukcuoglu has spent more than 13 years at DeepMind, where he started its deep-learning team and led foundational work on WaveNet and DQN. His new remit covers Gemini development, frontier research, the Gemini app and developer teams, including responsibility for the next major model, Gemini 4.

Google framed the changes as a way to accelerate. Hassabis wrote that Google was "the only company that has the full stack," and the memo noted that the Gemini app had crossed 950 million monthly users. But the internal picture was less settled than the memos suggested. Axios reported that DeepMind employees had pushed back amid a series of departures and that the next flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, was months behind schedule, with unnamed sources attributing part of the delay to low morale.

Jeff Dean's 27-Year Legacy at Google

Few engineers have shaped modern computing as profoundly as Jeff Dean. He joined Google in 1999 as employee number 30, when the company was still a startup in its infancy. Over the next 27 years, Dean and his longtime collaborator Sanjay Ghemawat designed the software systems that made Google scale possible: MapReduce, BigTable and Spanner, technologies that allowed the search engine to serve a global audience and became blueprints for the wider industry. Dean and Ghemawat are the only two Google employees ever to hold the company's highest technical honor, the rank of senior fellow.

Dean's influence extended deep into the AI era. He co-founded the Google Brain team, championed the development of TensorFlow, and played a central role in Google's TPU program and the modern Gemini research agenda. WIRED captured the magnitude of the departure with a music-industry analogy: Dean and Ghemawat leaving together, the outlet wrote, is "like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards ditching the Rolling Stones to start a new band."

Dean is not leaving alone. Alongside Ghemawat, he is joined by Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, two of Google's most decorated AI researchers, to found Discovery Loop. The departure continues a pattern of senior talent leaving Google's research ranks: earlier in 2026, researcher Tim Rocktäschel left to help found Recursive Superintelligence, another company pursuing AI systems that can improve themselves.

Discovery Loop: Automating the Scientific Method

Discovery Loop's mission is deceptively simple to state and enormously ambitious to execute: automate the loop of experimental research that scientists perform by hand. A model proposes an experiment, builds whatever it needs to run it, evaluates the result, and uses what it learned to design the next attempt, running thousands of such loops in pursuit of discoveries in biology, chip design and beyond.

The idea had been hiding in plain sight. On July 25, Dean stood before 6,000 would-be founders at Y Combinator's Startup School in San Francisco and described exactly this vision, an automated version of the scientific method, without revealing that he was describing a company he had just organized in secret. "You propose an experiment, you implement what you need to run the experiment, you evaluate the experiment, and then you get results from that," he said.

The startup is organized as a public benefit corporation, a for-profit structure intended to serve a public or social purpose. Khosla Ventures and Radical Ventures invested alongside Alphabet, though the founders declined to disclose the amount raised or the valuation. Google also agreed to supply computing capacity for the startup's first year. Vinod Khosla, who met the four founders in his Sand Hill Road office on a Saturday to keep the news quiet, called the group "the ultimate superstar team."

The founders plan to begin by improving their own machine-learning software, then apply the technique to scientific and engineering problems. The underlying concept, recursive self-improvement, means pointing that experimental loop at the AI system itself with minimal human involvement. Vinyals acknowledged the frontier challenge directly in a prelaunch interview: "One of the things that we'll be obviously very focused on is how these models come up with new ideas to try. That's not something that currently they're super strong at."

Why the Market Took Notice

Investors responded with clear discomfort. Alphabet shares fell more than 5% on August 5, trading down more than 4% at $362.31 by midday in New York. The reaction arrived at a delicate moment: Google is spending heavily on AI infrastructure, forecasting up to $205 billion in capital expenditure for full-year 2026, and its latest reported quarter turned cash-flow negative for the first time on record because of that spending. A single trading session cannot cleanly separate investor concerns about the executive departures from concerns about that capital outlay, but the combined signal was unmistakable: Google's AI strategy is under intense scrutiny.

The reshuffle also highlights how contested the top of the AI talent market has become. Frontier researchers with a track record like Dean's can now raise funding from elite investors almost instantly, and startups built around recursive self-improvement, from Rocktäschel's Recursive Superintelligence to Discovery Loop, are becoming a distinct category. At precisely the moment OpenAI reports AI systems making genuine advances in mathematics and Google faces delays with Gemini 3.5 Pro, the industry's deepest research bench is being redistributed.

For Google, the stakes go beyond one executive departure. The company retains perhaps the deepest AI talent pool in the industry, and Kavukcuoglu's promotion signals continuity at the top. But with Hassabis stepping back, four of its most senior scientists gone, and a flagship model behind schedule, the reorganization is a high-wire act: Google must prove it can keep pace with OpenAI and Anthropic while the very people who built its AI leadership are now building their own futures, in some cases right across the street.
