India's biggest fintech gathering wrapped up in Mumbai this week, and the announcements that matter most to a small business owner were not the grand vision statements. They were the ones that change what happens at the exact moment a customer pays you: a tap instead of a QR scan, an AI assistant that answers UPI queries after midnight, and payment tools that pull transactions, refunds and settlements into a single dashboard.
The seventh edition of the Global Fintech Fest (GFF 2026) ran from September 8 to 11 at the Jio World Centre and Trident BKC in Mumbai, organised by PCI, NPCI and the Fintech Convergence Council, with the RBI, SEBI, IFSCA and PFRDA as partners. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and SEBI Chairperson Tuhin Kanta Pandey addressed the conference. The theme said it all: Agentic AI, Tokenisation and Quantum, built around "trusted, connected, global systems for inclusive finance".
What follows is a practical reading of the news for India's small businesses: what was launched, and what it changes for you on the shop floor, at the counter and on your balance sheet.
GFF 2026 at a Glance: From Experimentation to Scale
GFF has grown since 2020 into one of the world's leading fintech gatherings, and this edition was positioned as a launchpad rather than a talking shop. The overarching message from the industry - and from the regulators on stage - was that emerging technologies such as agentic AI, tokenisation, biometric payments and automated underwriting are now moving out of pilot projects and into live financial use cases.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the opening keynote to call for deeper UPI links with overseas payment systems, extending India's home-grown payments rail to more countries.
- RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra unveiled two new UPI capabilities - UPI Tap & Pay and MyUPI - and made a point that should matter to every MSME: fintech innovation must address real consumer and business needs beyond India's largest cities, with small businesses and consumers in smaller towns forming the next phase of financial inclusion.
- The launch list spanned payments, merchant tools and AI infrastructure, from Amazon Pay's agentic wallet to new bank-fintech partnerships aimed squarely at merchants.
In other words: the plumbing underneath Indian commerce is being upgraded again, and small businesses will feel it at the point of sale.
UPI Tap & Pay: The Checkout Counter Gets Faster
The single most consequential announcement for retail businesses was UPI Tap & Pay, unveiled by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra on September 10. The feature lets a customer pay by unlocking an NFC-enabled smartphone and tapping it on an NFC-enabled point-of-sale (POS) terminal.
Two details stand out for merchants:
- The customer's phone does not need an active mobile internet connection. The transaction is processed using the POS terminal's connectivity. That removes one of the oldest friction points in Indian retail payments - customers struggling with patchy mobile data at the counter.
- Small-ticket payments get a no-PIN flow. UPI payments of up to Rs 5,000 can be completed without entering a UPI PIN. Above Rs 5,000, the customer enters the PIN on the terminal itself. The feature works across UPI-linked account types, including RuPay credit cards linked to UPI.
This builds on NPCI's UPI biometric authentication, introduced at GFF 2025. According to the announcement, the combined volume of biometric-authenticated UPI transactions has already crossed 6.29 billion as of August 31, 2026 - a reminder of how quickly authentication layers scale once customers accept them.
What it means for your business: tap-based checkout is typically faster than scanning a QR code and keying an amount, which matters during peak hours when queues cost you sales. If your counters still run QR-only, it is worth asking your POS provider or payment service provider when their terminals will support NFC tap acceptance, and whether your existing machines can be upgraded with a software update or need replacement. If you operate high-volume counters - food, grocery, pharmacy, fuel - a two-second faster checkout compounds across hundreds of daily transactions.
MyUPI and the FiMI Model: AI Now Handles UPI Support and Disputes
The second RBI announcement, MyUPI, is best understood as UPI Help 2.0 - an AI-powered platform built on NPCI's Small Language Model called FiMI. NPCI also unveiled FiMI Banking, described as India's first sovereign compact AI model designed specifically for Indian retail banking use cases, which it will develop further with HDFC Bank while open-sourcing its banking AI benchmarks, technical report and evaluation sets.
For users, MyUPI promises a single view of UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates across banks and UPI apps, plus a set of safety controls:
- A Safety Switch that lets a user request that UPI debit transactions be declined if they suspect their account has been compromised.
- UPI Number Delink, to delink a mobile number from receiving payments.
- Payee context information, giving users more detail about a beneficiary before they authorise a payment.
- Automated Chargeback Processing for eligible transactions, with real-time creation of chargebacks aimed at cutting complaint resolution times.
- Transaction Replay, to recall and repeat past transactions from any UPI app, plus 24x7 multilingual support and self-service options.
What it means for your business: every one of these features shortens the distance between a payment going wrong and it getting fixed. Faster automated chargebacks cut the weeks of back-and-forth that currently stall refunds and settlements, and payee context checks reduce misdirected payments. The operational implication is simple but easy to ignore: keep your order records - invoices, delivery confirmations, return logs - clean and complete. When dispute cycles speed up, the merchant who can produce evidence quickly wins the chargeback, and the one who cannot, pays.
Agentic Wallets and AI Agents: When Machines Start Shopping and Paying
The loudest theme at GFF 2026 was agentic AI - software agents that don't just answer questions but complete transactions. Three launches are worth tracking:
- Amazon Pay Smart Wallet: a wallet that allows AI agents to make UPI payments on behalf of users, starting with flight ticket bookings. Amazon Pay also introduced biometric authentication through the wallet, and offline tap-to-pay, with plans to extend agentic UPI payments to more merchants and use cases.
- PayU Agent HQ: a no-code platform designed to help small and medium businesses deploy AI agents across functions such as sales, marketing and operations. The company's framing is "agentic commerce" - customers discovering products and completing purchases inside conversational AI interfaces rather than only on websites, apps or search.
- Yes Bank and Open: an agentic layer designed to reduce payment failures, part of a broader set of bank-fintech partnerships announced at the event.
What it means for your business: if customers start their product discovery inside an AI assistant, they will only find what the assistant can read and trust. That makes the humble product catalogue a strategic asset again: accurate descriptions, current prices, stock status, delivery timelines and return policies in structured, machine-readable form. Businesses that treat their listings as an afterthought will be invisible in AI-led discovery; businesses that keep them clean will get found. PayU's no-code positioning also signals that AI agents are no longer an enterprise-only luxury - SME-grade tools are arriving, which means the cost of experimenting is dropping fast.
Tokenisation, Routing and Reconciliation: The Unglamorous Upgrades That Save Hours
Away from the AI headlines, some of the most useful announcements for merchants were about payment infrastructure - the unglamorous layer where money actually moves, fails, settles and reconciles.
- PhonePe and Visa unveiled three payment solutions - Tap to Pay, Cross Border Scan to Pay and Smart Accept - aimed at enabling cardless payments for consumers and card acceptance for micro-merchants. The partnership brings together Visa's online tokenisation, contactless payments and cross-border QR capabilities on the PhonePe platform, making it the first Indian app to offer the combined suite.
- DBS Bank India and Juspay expanded the DBS MAX merchant collections platform with a digital payment management solution that gives businesses access to multiple payment aggregators through a single integration, with intelligent payment routing, gateway-agnostic tokenisation, and a unified dashboard for transaction monitoring, refunds and reconciliation.
- BharatPeX, the enterprise payments arm of BharatPe, launched a payment gateway for ecommerce businesses that combines UPI, cards, net banking and bank transfers in a single integration, covering checkout, settlements, refunds, payouts and reconciliation - with dynamic transaction routing based on factors such as payment success rates and acquiring partner performance.
- On the cross-border side, RBI Deputy Governor Rohit Jain announced the soft launch of multicurrency forex services on Bharat Connect, adding five currencies - the euro, the pound, the Canadian dollar, the Swiss franc and the UAE dirham - for foreign currency purchase, overseas remittances and forex card reloads.
What it means for your business: this is the "where did that refund go" problem being attacked from several directions at once. Gateway-agnostic tokenisation means you are not locked into one provider's card vault. Dynamic routing that automatically shifts traffic towards the acquirer with the best success rate is quietly one of the highest-ROI features a growing online seller can adopt - failed payments are pure lost revenue. And a unified reconciliation dashboard turns an evening of spreadsheet-matching into a five-minute check. If you sell to customers abroad, or buy from suppliers overseas, the Bharat Connect multicurrency expansion is worth following as it moves from controlled testing to full rollout.
What Indian Small Businesses Should Do Now
- Check your POS terminals. Ask your bank or POS provider whether your machines are NFC-enabled for UPI Tap & Pay. If they are not, get a timeline for upgrade or replacement before your competitors do.
- Ask for a payments success-rate report. Your payment gateway can share authorisation rates by method and route. If your provider cannot, that is information for your next renewal conversation.
- Keep a backup payment provider. Route a slice of traffic to a secondary gateway so a single outage or outage-like degradation on a big sales day does not take your revenue down with it.
- Invest in your catalogue data. Structured, accurate product feeds - descriptions, prices, stock, delivery and return terms - are the entry ticket to AI-led discovery and agentic commerce.
- Tighten your order records. With automated chargeback processing on the way, disputes will resolve faster. Merchants with clean invoices and delivery proof will win more of them.
- Train your counter staff. Explain the Rs 5,000 no-PIN limit, and the PIN-on-terminal flow above it, so the first tap-and-pay customer at your counter is not a five-minute confusion.
- Watch the cross-border rails. Exporters, freelancers and sellers billing overseas customers should track the Bharat Connect multicurrency rollout and the UPI cross-border expansion the Prime Minister called for.
The through-line of GFF 2026 is that India's payment infrastructure is being rebuilt around speed, intelligence and automation - and most of it will reach small businesses through the tools they already use: their POS terminal, their payment gateway, their UPI app. The businesses that prepare now, by asking the right questions of their providers and keeping their data clean, will be the ones that benefit first.
